Status of Medical Colleges

Silchar Medical College, Silchar.

Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Silchar is a premier Institution of the north-east and is the only referral hospital in this region eg. the neighboring areas of Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura since its inception in 1968.

At the moment the college has the capacity of 100 admissions into the MBBS course, 75 admissions in P.G. Degree, and 7 admissions in P.G. Diploma courses.

The bachelor degree (MBBS) is recognized by the Medical Council of India for 100 admissions. PG courses in 18 departments having 82 PG seats are all recognized by the MCI (Medical Council of India).

Post Graduate Courses have been started in almost all the departments except Community Medicine

  • History of the College: The Government of Assam, in its Order No. –HLB 322/2005/pt./48 - dated 21/09/2005,has accorded sanction for the establishment of Government Medical College at Bihaguri, Tezpur, Sonitpur namely “TEZPUR MEDICAL COLLEGE”, TEZPUR, a dream project to the backward region of the Assam State
  • The Land measuring 36.8 acres(110 bighas) located at Bihaguri by the side of Asian Highway (AH)-15 has been handed over for the construction and establishment of the Govt. Medical College Building, Hospital building, Girls /Boys Hostel, Doctors Residential Quarters, Nurses/ Resident Hostel, grade III & IV employees quarter, Mortuary complex, etc. The construction work started during 2008-09 . The construction completed towards the end of 2013 and Admission started FOR THEACADEMIC YEAR 2014-05. At present 300 students are studying in the college i.e. 3rd Batch Admission for the academic year 2016-17. The college is nearly well established only in its4 years fulfilling almost all the criteria laid down by the Medical Council of India and affiliated to the Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, Guwahati, Assam (Affiliating University).
  • The original estimated cost for establishment of TMC was Rs.160 crores , which was subsequently revised up to Rs. 250 crores including Rs. 35.00 crores was earmarked for procurement of equipment and furniture.
